In 2004 the BWF committed to allocating all revenue the IOC allocated to the BWF from the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and to all future Olympic Games to the development of badminton. This represents a significant investment in development activities worldwide. The BWF now invests 50% of its annual turnover on development initiatives.

The scope of BWF activities include:

  1. Establishing World Training Centres in Saarbrucken (March 2005), Sofia (July 2005) and Guangzhou (September 2006);

  2. Distributing grants to the Continental Confederations to undertake development activities at the regional and local levels in partnership with national associations;

  3. Developing coach education courses;

  4. Conducting courses for technical officials – referees, umpires, line judges;

  5. Utilizing itinerate coaches to conduct targeted development activities in the Continents;

  6. Distributing equipment (shuttles, racquets, nets) to under developed regions for badminton development activities;

  7. Supporting member Associations to access Olympic Solidarity funding through their National Olympic Committees to deliver development activities;

  8. Undertaking sports science & research in badminton.
